It can be unsettling to think that the person sitting next to you in the classroom is doing so on an empty stomach – not because they chose to skip breakfast or lunch, but because they simply didn’t have enough food to eat. But this is the reality for many college students, and the problem has been getting worse in recent years. 40% of Montana Tech students have a food insecurity as of Spring 2020
Conceived as an idea by the Associated Students of Montana Tech the purpose of the Montana Tech Food Pantry is to support Montana Tech students facing food insecurity. The food pantry will help relieve the stress of students and of the Butte Food Bank. The Montana Tech Food Pantry will be anonymous, and the students will be able to take products on their own time.
This vision for the Montana Tech Food Pantry is to choose a centralized location on campus that will be easily accessible for students. Once the location is determined the pantry will need to be constructed to best fit the space and to best serve our students. The Associated Students of Montana Tech are raising funds to help with the initial costs of the food bank. This is for shelves, nonperishable nutrient dense foods and hygiene products. In the future the food pantry will be kept in operations through donations and funding through ASMT and students. Our hope is to bring the Montana Tech Food Pantry online in November 2020.
Orediggers are there for each other and we think that the Montana Tech Food Pantry is an example of this in action. Please consider making a gift to the Montana Tech Food Pantry during DayOne.
