Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences
William & Elny Chance Scholarship

As Montana Tech celebrates 125 years of excellence, the Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences Department continues to prepare students to think critically, communicate effectively, and connect ideas across disciplines. Unlike programs that concentrate solely on technical training, IAS emphasizes the humanities, literature, philosophy, communication, history, and the arts, while also drawing from the strengths of science and technology that define Montana Tech.

At its heart, Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences is about understanding people, culture, and society. Students learn to ask big questions, analyze complex issues, and communicate with clarity and creativity. By engaging with the humanities alongside science and technology, IAS graduates are prepared to tackle modern challenges with empathy, insight, and innovation.

Our Commitment to Belonging

Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences faculty and students are deeply committed to the ideals of diversity, acceptance, and inclusion. We foster a welcoming environment for all learners, free from racism, sexism, bigotry, harassment, and oppression. These values are central to the humanities and central to our department—because moving society forward requires not just technical skill, but ethical understanding and human connection.

DayOne Focus: The William & Elny Chance Scholarship

Our students bring diverse life experiences but share a common goal: to grow as thinkers, leaders, and problem-solvers through the humanities. Many also share a common need: financial support. That’s why this DayOne we’re asking you to invest in the William & Elny Chance Scholarship, which supports deserving IAS students each year.

Through the William & Elny Chance Scholarship we are able to:

  • Expand scholarship awards to reach more students
  • Help reduce financial barriers so students can focus on their studies
  • Strengthens Montana Tech’s tradition of providing education blending the humanities with science & technology
