For 125 years, Montana Tech has prepared problem-solvers to meet the world’s toughest challenges. The Mathematical Sciences Department continues that legacy by equipping students for in-demand, high-paying careers where math, data, and computing intersect. With a major, minor, and teaching certificate options, our graduates thrive in graduate school and in careers across the private sector, medicine, law, education, and government.
What sets us apart is our close-knit, supportive, family-like community, faculty who know students by name, mentorship that lasts long after graduation, and a culture that encourages curiosity, collaboration, and real-world problem solving.
During DayOne 2025, in honor of Montana Tech’s 125th anniversary, Mathematical Sciences is rallying support for two scholarships that reflect who we are and what we value, academic excellence, resilience, and community:
In this spirit for DayOne Mathematical Sciences is raising funds for two scholarships, the Jacob Simpson Memorial Math Annual Scholarship and the SageStrong Sage Lindsay Memorial Scholarship, honoring two students lost far too soon.
Jacob Simpson found his academic home in the Mathematical Sciences at Montana Tech. While pursuing his degree in Mathematical Studies, Jacob was selected by the national program SMART Scholars which provided scholarship support and a contract to work for the Department of Defense upon graduation. He began a research project “Explorations of Two Cryptographic Algorithms” with his professor and mentor, Dr. Atish Mitra, that afforded him the opportunity to present his work at a mathematical symposium at Gonzaga University his senior year.
Jacob passed on January 26th, 2021, and to honor his memory and the department that he cared about deeply, his family established the Jacob Simpson Memorial Math Annual Scholarship. The Jacob Simpson Memorial Math Annual Scholarship will be awarded each year to a Junior or Senior studying Mathematical Sciences at Montana Tech.

Please consider making a gift today to the Jacob Simpson Memorial Math Annual Scholarship. Thanks to Jack '73 and Leah McCarthy, all donations made during DayOne will be matched 1:1 up to $1,000.
Sage Lindsay embodied the type of student that succeeds at Montana Tech. She was smart and curious, she was fun and a leader. Most of all Sage never backed down from a challenge, including a diagnosis of cancer.
During her time at Montana Tech studying Mathematical Sciences, Sage made the Dean's list, was part of the rodeo club, found a country swing dancing group, and joined the Copper Hill Choir. She also made an impact on each person she met.
Heaven gained another angel on January 23rd, 2019. Sage's family is dedicated to honoring Sage's spirit and to supporting future Montana Tech students that show the same sense of spunk and vitality. In this spirit, they have created the SageStrong-Sage Lindsay Memorial Scholarship to support bright students just like Sage who will bring a sense of fun to Montana Tech.
Please consider making a gift today to the SageStrong-Sage Lindsay Memorial Scholarship. Thanks to Jack '73 and Leah McCarthy, donations made during DayOne will be matched 1:1 up to $1,000.
