Questions and Answers

Below you will find answers to many common questions about DayOne 2025.

What is DayOne?

Montana Technological University (then the Montana State School of Mines) opened its doors on September 11, 1900 with one building (Main Hall) and just two degree programs — Mining Engineering and Electrical Engineering. That was our Day One.

Nearly 125 years later, Montana Tech is a thriving university offering more than 60 degrees, with a growing campus and a proud tradition of excellence.

To celebrate our history and continued growth, we are hosting our seventh annual digital fundraising event — DayOne — running from noon on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, through noon on Friday, September 12, 2025.

DayOne unites the Montana Tech community to share what’s happening on campus and raise vital funds for our departments, programs, clubs, and initiatives.

Why Is Montana Technological University having a giving event?

From our beginnings — 39 students, one building, and two degrees — to today’s 2,200 students and more than 60 degrees, Montana Tech has grown tremendously.

Our mission is to recruit, retain, prepare, educate, and graduate students while delivering the exceptional education Montana Tech is known for. DayOne celebrates what we offer today while building momentum for our future.

Why is DayOne taking place on September 10, 11, and 12, 2025?

Montana Tech’s original “Day One” was September 11, 1900 — the date our first students began classes. We honor that milestone each year with an event that recognizes the growth and goals of our departments and projects.

We also acknowledge that September 11 is a solemn date in U.S. history. Our intent is to honor Montana Tech’s legacy and not diminish the significance of that National Day of Remembrance.

This year's event will run on and adjacent to our anniversary starting at noon on September 10, all day September 11, and through noon on September 12, 2025

What areas can I support during DayOne?

We’ve worked to include a wide range of projects representing Montana Tech and Highlands College. Each department has identified a specific fundraising focus, which will be visible on our DayOne home page.

If your area of interest isn’t listed, you can select “Other” and designate your preferred program or cause. Gifts made on our general giving page (foundation.mtech.edu/give) between September 10–12, 2025 will count toward DayOne totals.
