We opened our doors on September 11, 1900, as the Montana State School of Mines with one building (Main Hall) and two degrees (Mining Engineering and Electrical Engineering). Since then, our mission has expanded to embrace the responsible development of natural resources and energy, and today, as Montana Technological University, we serve as Montana’s only Special Focus science and engineering university. Through every era, we’ve stayed true to hands-on learning and our heritage of work ethic, innovation, and opportunity.

Our mission expanded in the 1960s to include programs focused on the responsible development of natural resources and energy. To celebrate our history, and our growth, we plan to host a series of events leading up to and during our 125th anniversary in 2025.
