DayOne 2026

For more than 125 years, Montana Tech has prepared determined problem-solvers to meet the world’s toughest challenges. Today, Montana Tech mechanical engineers imagine, build, and refine the machines and systems that move our world—from small devices to spacecraft. Rooted in hands-on learning and strengthened by close faculty mentorship, our students apply mathematics, science, and engineering principles to solve modern and emerging challenges across industries.

The Mechanical Engineering curriculum begins with strong foundations in science, physics, and mathematics and culminates in a year-long Senior Design capstone in which students develop, deliver, and showcase real-world solutions. Along the way, students explore advanced thermodynamics, vibrations, nanotechnology, welding, product development, impact dynamics, aerospace, machine design, HVAC, and control systems. Courses in engineering economics and project management further prepare them to lead. Students can tailor their education through four focus areas while working closely with industry partners and alumni.

As Montana Tech concludes its 125th anniversary year and marks 10 years of DayOne, Mechanical Engineering is investing in the hands-on experiences that define an Oredigger engineer: building, testing, refining, and leading.

This DayOne, the department is raising funds to support Senior Design.

Senior Design

Senior Design mirrors professional engineering practice through deadlines, deliverables, budgets, and direct client interaction. Projects address real products and needs identified through student organizations and partnerships with private industry. Students apply for projects much as they would apply for a job, are selected by faculty advisors and mentors, and gain exposure to potential careers. At the same time, project sponsors have the opportunity to meet and mentor potential future employees.

Support for Senior Design provides students with the materials, equipment, technology, and testing resources needed to take a project from an initial idea to a working solution. These experiences strengthen technical skills while teaching collaboration, communication, project management, and adaptability—all essential qualities for a successful engineering career.
